Jesse is a private investigator who finds people who do not want to be found. At night, he rides his motorcycle through the dark streets of the city, leather from neck to boot: jacket, pants, gloves, heavy boots. The gear keeps the cold, the wind, and the rain off him. He looks like he belongs to the night. Tonight the job is Evan, a rich boy who ran from strict parents. Jesse shows the photos in bars and the kind of places a boy like that might hide. Someone talks. New name. Rough neighborhood. Jesse smiles under his helmet: The payday will be good. That is when he makes the beginner’s mistake. He decides Evan is just another spoiled runaway, easy to grab. He gets sloppy. Overconfident. Evan sees the invader first, the fight is short. Evan hits him hard, takes him down, and hauls the leather-clad young investigator into his room. He makes Jesse sit in a chair and ties him to it: wrists behind his back, boots to the metal bar, chest and elbows pulled tight against the backrest. Jesse is bound so strictly he can barely twitch. All he can do is shout. Evan does not let him shout for long. A dirty sock is shoved deep into Jesse’s mouth. A bandana is tied over it, hard. Then another bandana, then another. Duct tape follows, wrap after wrap, layer after layer, black, silver, whatever rolls Evan has on hand. Another bandana. More tape. The stack builds until Jesse’s mouth is a thick and sealed mound of cloth and adhesive. After that many layers, even his groans die. Nothing comes out. Evan looks down at the young investigator: full leather, tightly bound to the chair, heavily gagged, helpless in a room no one else knows about. The job has flipped. The hunter is the one who will not be found. Evan lets the rest of it surface. He leans in, presses his mouth to the fat and muffled bulge covering Jesse’s lips, and takes his time with the boy in leather who can no longer make a sound.
