Jeanette returns to her car after a walk in the park. Bright sunlight illuminates the parking lot, and every step draws attention to her new shoes—they gleam so intensely that the sun’s rays reflect off their surface as if they were made of real gold. Jeanette opens the door, slides behind the wheel, and settles into the seat. She glances down at her feet, then places one foot on the pedal. Her golden shoe slowly lowers onto the pedal; the heel stays on the floor while the toe presses smoothly downward. She turns the key in the ignition, but the engine merely makes a brief attempt to start before falling silent again. Jeanette stares ahead in surprise. She presses the pedal again—gently at first. The shiny toe of the shoe moves up and down with the pedal, while the heel remains almost stationary. She turns the key again. Nothing. Jeanette begins to feel annoyed. Her movements become sharper: she pumps the pedal rapidly, pressing it harder against the floor each time, then releasing and pressing again. The golden shoe catches the light brilliantly as her foot works the pedal nervously. She turns the key again while pressing the pedal, but the car doesn't respond. Jeanette sighs heavily and tries once more. Now she is angry: she stomps down hard on the pedal, releases it, presses again, and holds it for a few seconds. The pedal sinks under the pressure of her shoe, yet the engine remains silent. Jeanette stares at her foot for a moment, then at the dashboard. She makes one final attempt—pressing down hard with her shiny shoe and turning the key. But nothing happens. Jeanette completely loses her patience. She takes her foot off the pedal, abruptly opens the door, gets out of the car, and slams the door shut in annoyance. After a brief pause, she turns around and walks away.
