Smoke, Nylons, and a No-Start
It’s the end of the workday, outside the office, and Jane has returned to her car. She’s still dressed for work, black flats, tights, and her usual outfit, clearly ready to head home.
At first, nothing seems out of the ordinary. She turns the key once: nothing. A second quick attempt follows, and she immediately knows that if the car doesn’t start soon, it’s going to become a problem.
What follows is a prolonged struggle. Jane cranks the Metro repeatedly, calm and focused, saying nothing at all. She listens carefully, pumping and adjusting instinctively, hoping for any sign of life. Minutes pass with no success.
Eventually, she pauses to steady herself and lights a cigarette, taking a moment to calm her nerves. Once lit, she tries again this time with the cigarette still resting between her lips. With her left hand, she reaches for the choke, only to find it stubbornly jammed. She twists and tugs at it, trying to free it from its locked position. The resistance is real, the frustration genuine.
When it finally loosens, she almost gets the engine to catch but it doesn’t quite make it. The car falls back into lifeless cranking once more.
She finishes the cigarette and keeps going, determination replacing patience. A couple of quiet, barely audible pleas slip out “come on… please” as the struggle continues.
One final attempt at the choke, another turn of the key it snaps back into position, and at last the engine roars into life.
