The Magic Show
Audrey lounges on the couch beside her boyfriend, barefoot and still in her sleepwear after a long night out celebrating their anniversary. She starts recounting the bizarre magic show they attended with her boss Gary and his wife Hazel—an adults-only magic show where everyone signed consent forms at the door. Between laughter and occasional dazed moments, Audrey describes how the magician put her boyfriend and Gary under spells, made them kneel, and eventually had them serve Hazel in outlandish ways. Audrey’s retelling grows foggy and odd, especially when she starts recalling being cut in half and enchanted herself, her top half singing and her bottom half catering to the audience—memories she half-remembers, half-denies. As their morning conversation continues, Audrey playfully teases her boyfriend about what happened the night before, until she suddenly speaks in a monotone voice: “Feet are hot. Master magician said so.” She quickly returns to normal, casually placing her feet in his lap and laughing about the magician’s antics. But when the magician calls her directly, something shifts. Audrey’s demeanor changes entirely—her expression goes blank, and she places her boyfriend under the spell with a snap. In a robotic tone, she declares they’ve been sold as a package and will serve the highest bidder, just like Gary and Hazel. Audrey then mechanically marches out toward the door, completely under the magician’s control.
