Allegra Tests the Bypass Plugs
Our bypass plug test was developed in response to Allegra's ability to develop up to 4.2psi against a closed tube, but inability to begin to stretch a Ukrainian hot water bottle, the same model and size of which had previously only required approximately 2.6psi from the foot pump to begin stretching. One of our colleagues in the UK has suggested that we modify our blowing pressure test to examine how the subject's maximum blowing pressure might be affected by airflow, or be influenced by squeezing air from the cheeks. So in this particular experiment, we have prepared five brass plugs with holes drilled in them as follows:brown - #15 drill - 0.1800" dia - 0.02545 sq in areared - 1/8" drill - 0.1250" dia - 0.01227 sq in areaorange - #43 drill - 0.0890" dia - 0.006221 sq in areayellow - 1/16" drill - 0.06250" dia - 0.003068 sq in area green - #57 drill - 0.04300" dia - 0.001452 sq in areaAs you can see, each successive plug has half the open area of the last. For each plug, Allegra takes a full breath, fully inflates her cheeks, and pushes all her air through the hole as fast as she can. The results are very informative!
