Words Clara has said correctly dozens of times.

Until suddenly she can't.

A sentence can start brilliantly before taking an unexpected detour into complete linguistic chaos.

Words get swapped.

Pronunciations mutate.

Pauses appear in ridiculous places.

The emphasis lands on entirely the wrong word.

A straightforward statement gets delivered like the climax of a Shakespearean tragedy.

Or Clara reaches the end of a complicated sentence perfectly — only to completely mangle the easiest word in it.

Sometimes she seems pleased with herself afterwards.

Which somehow makes it even funnier.

CONTINUITY? WHAT CONTINUITY?

Artificial intelligence also has an interesting relationship with continuity.

Clara can begin a scene wearing one thing and finish wearing something subtly—or not so subtly—different.

Objects move.

Furniture changes.

Props disappear.

New props arrive without invitation.

Background details transform themselves.

A hairstyle that behaved perfectly for twenty seconds suddenly develops ambitions of its own.

Sometimes Clara herself seems slightly surprised by what has happened.

A cup might change shape.

A chair might move.

Something Clara was holding can mysteriously vanish.

Occasionally something appears in her hand despite there being absolutely no logical explanation for where it came from.

Watch the backgrounds carefully.

There may be an entire second comedy happening behind her.

THE EXPRESSIONS

Then come Clara's facial expressions.

Artificial intelligence can produce a wonderfully convincing performance.

It can also choose precisely the wrong expression for precisely the wrong moment.

A serious statement gets a grin.

A joke receives a stare of profound concern.

A completely ordinary remark apparently causes Clara to contemplate every decision she has ever made.

Sometimes she looks directly at the camera with an expression that seems to say:

“Did you see what the AI just made me do?”

We did, Clara.

THE MOVEMENTS

Walking should be simple.

Sitting down should be simple.

Turning around should be simple.

Picking something up should definitely be simple.

AI occasionally disagrees.

Clara can walk beautifully for most of a shot before something inexplicable happens during the final second.

She can reach for an object and discover that reality isn't quite cooperating.

She can sit, stand, turn, gesture or move her hands in a way that was certainly not mentioned anywhere in the script.

And because these little disasters are unpredictable, they can be considerably funnier than anything deliberately scripted.

SOMETIMES THE MISTAKE IS BETTER

That's really why CLARA UNPLUGGED exists.

Normally, mistakes are discarded.

Generate another version. Fix the scene. Choose the good take. Put the successful clips together and pretend everything worked perfectly the first time.

But occasionally you look at a failed generation and think:

We cannot possibly throw THAT away.

Some glitches are too funny.

Some mistakes are too strange.

Some performances are too wonderfully ridiculous.

And some are so completely inexplicable that they deserve to be preserved simply as evidence that they actually happened.

So we kept them.

SPOT THE GLITCH

Some mistakes will hit you immediately.

Others are much more subtle.

You may notice something on the second viewing that you completely missed the first time.

Watch Clara.

Then watch her clothes.

CLARA’S CHEST-SLAP CHALLENGE — Can Geezer Actually Make Her Feel It?

Clara has another challenge for Geezer. This one sounds ridiculously simple: hurt her using nothing but slaps to her chest.

There's just one problem.

Geezer is hopeless at it.

Clara stands there waiting for something impressive to happen, but Geezer's first attempts barely seem to register. She laughs at him, complains that he's being far too gentle and repeatedly challenges him to try harder.

Eventually Clara decides her bra is getting in the way. Off it comes. Now Geezer has absolutely no excuse—and Clara is more determined than ever to prove that her supposedly tough interrogator simply hasn't got what it takes.

What begins as a serious challenge rapidly descends into classic Clara-and-Geezer comedy, with Clara teasing him, Geezer becoming increasingly frustrated and neither of them quite believing how badly his supposedly simple assignment is going.

But persistence eventually pays off.

Geezer finally summons up the courage to deliver the sort of almighty slap Clara has been demanding—and gets a considerably bigger reaction than either of them expected.

Clara actually pees herself!

Challenge accomplished perhaps a little too successfully.

It's outrageous, embarrassing and completely ridiculous—but Clara sees the funny side, and the whole escapade ends in the same good humour in which it began.
