After a summer away, you return to campus and unexpectedly run into an old classmate. But this year, something’s different—she’s noticeably bigger. It seems she spent her summer getting quite a bit larger. Despite the obvious changes, she’s in complete denial about her new pudge. She confidently insists that she’s developed a six-pack and even argues that she’s still skinny, claiming she outgrew all her clothes because of the "muscles" she supposedly gained from all the "protein" shakes she drank.
As you watch her struggle with her clothing—her skirt looking like it's about to burst at the seams and her sweater barely able to zip—it’s clear to you that she’s just fat, not fit. The situation becomes even more surreal as she continues talking with you, all the while scarfing down a glazed donut without missing a beat. It’s almost as if she’s completely oblivious to the irony of her words and actions.
The more she talks, the more it becomes clear that she’s in deep denial, clinging to a version of herself that no longer exists. As she pops another bite into her mouth, you realize that this summer didn’t just change her body—it shifted something deeper, a disconnect between how she sees herself and the reality she’s living.
