ITALIAN SPEAKING. Today G. is over for a laid-back afternoon; we get hungry for a snack, but I open the fridge and it’s practically empty—my slave completely forgot to go shopping. He crawls straight to his knees, stammering pathetic apologies. Doesn’t matter. The damage is done. I pull out everything rotting in the back corners: eggs gone bad and oozing green slime, months-old mayo turned gray and curdled, mold-covered corn, rancid yogurt that reeks of acid. I shove a silver tray at the worm and order him to prepare our lunch. On the cold stone floor I make him spell out a huge heart in mayo with “G + L†inside, scatter little moldy-corn stars around it, and place the intact rotten eggs right in the center like a masterpiece’s finishing touch. Then G. and I start stomping. Our boots sink in, crush, mash everything together: shells explode, putrid yolk splatters everywhere, mold sticks to the soles. In seconds the pretty design is nothing but a nauseating, multicolored sludge. I tell him to eat. First he licks our boots clean, inch by inch, digging his tongue into every groove to get the filth out of the treads. Then he drops to all fours and finishes the rest straight off the floor, face buried in the slop, swallowing without a sound. We watch him while sipping coffee, perfectly satisfied. I remind him that next time he forgets the shopping list, he eats straight from the trash can. He nods, mouth still stuffed with mold and rotten egg. Lesson learned. Our snack, in the end, is served.
Oggi G. è da me per un pomeriggio rilassato; ci viene voglia di uno spuntino, ma apro il frigo e lo trovo semivuoto: il mio schiavo si è bellamente dimenticato di fare la spesa. Striscia subito in ginocchio, farfuglia scuse ridicole. Non importa, il danno è fatto. Tiro fuori tutto ciò che marcisce nei cassetti più nascosti: uova marce che colano un verde schifoso, maionese grigia e separata da mesi, mais ricoperto di muffa, yogurt rancido che puzza di acido. Gli porgo al verme un vassoio d’argento e gli ordino di preparare il nostro pranzo. Sul pavimento freddo di pietra lo costringo a scrivere con la maionese un cuore enorme che racchiude le iniziali “G + Lâ€, intorno sparpaglia stelline di mais ammuffito e al centro posiziona le uova marce ancora intere, come ciliegina sulla torta. Poi io e G. ci divertiamo a calpestare tutto quanto. Gli stivali affondano, schiacciano, mescolano: gusci che scoppiano, tuorlo putrido che schizza ovunque, muffa che si attacca alle suole. In pochi secondi il capolavoro è ridotto a una poltiglia rivoltante, multicolore e nauseabonda. Gli ordino di mangiare. Prima lecca i nostri stivali, centimetro dopo centimetro, scavando con la lingua ogni grumo incastrato nei battistrada. Poi si abbassa a quattro zampe e finisce il resto direttamente dal pavimento, faccia immersa in quella brodaglia, ingoiando senza fiatare. Lo osserviamo sorseggiando caffè, perfettamente soddisfatte. Gli ricordo che la prossima volta che si dimentica la lista della spesa, mangerà dritto dal bidone. Annuisce, la bocca ancora piena di muffa e uovo marcio. Lezione imparata. Il nostro spuntino, alla fine, è servito.
