I get up, open the curtains, and step out onto the balcony. Bright sunshine and plenty of light in my tired eyes. Good morning, world! Here’s the dull rumble in my chest as it wakes up too—a clamor of ominous sounds. You don’t really think I can smoke about 50 cigarettes a day and not have lung problems, do you? Of course I do. But you see, it’s a matter of perception, not just lifestyle. I know I’m feeling good only when I cough hard and expel tons of gunk. My body is working perfectly. I rub my eyes and the cough makes itself felt in my chest, burning my alveoli. My lungs are demanding their proper dose of nicotine again today. And they’re right! That’s what the cough is for. It’s a signal the body sends when it’s going through cigarette withdrawal. Kind of like when your stomach growls because you’re so hungry. Too tired last night. Too many hours without smoking, and that really thickens the sludge inside my chest. My cough tells me my body is healthy! Clouds of smoke build up throughout the day, and then the next morning my lungs expel tons of catarrh that rises up through my windpipe. My system works perfectly. My cough is strong; it jostles my breasts this way and that, free to sway beneath my babydoll. The morning roar ushers in a new day filled with smoke. This is wellness! A nice pack of Marlboro Reds is here waiting for me. And before anything else, even before breakfast, I must immediately satisfy this insane urge to inhale.
