Bambi & Samara: Halloween Brownies
Samara and Bambi bounce into the kitchen - both in thick, bulky diapers that sit high on their hips and cause a slight waddle when they move - the plastic rustling with every step. Halloween is close enough to taste and they have been talking about the boxed brownies all day. Their caregiver bought the mix and left it on the counter with a note that they could make them if they were careful.
They gather everything with more enthusiasm than order. Mixing bowl, measuring cup, oil, eggs, water. They tear the pouch open and dump the dry mix in a bowl. Eggs, water and oil follows. Samara uses the electric mixer to mix the ingredients together. They scrape the thick batter into the pan, spreading it with a spatula. The pan goes into the oven. They stand there for a moment watching the door close, diapers rustling as they shift from foot to foot, then they leave the kitchen.
Time passes. When they come back the oven is off and the pan is already sitting on a cooling rack on the counter. Their caregiver has pulled the brownies out, let them finish, and left them there. The kitchen still smells like chocolate and warm sugar. Both of their diapers are heavy and sagging, the padding darkened and swollen between their legs.
Frosting comes out next, green and black. They work side by side, spreading it in uneven swirls across the cooled brownies. Bambi’s diapered hip leans against the counter; Samara’s does the same on the other side. Candy spider and bug sprinkles get spread over the frosting. Fingers get sticky. Every time one of them reaches or turns, the wet diapers announce themselves with a low, soaked rustle. They keep decorating anyway, smiling, crowding the brownies with Halloween clutter until the pan looks crowded and festive and a little chaotic — exactly like the rest of the kitchen.
