The Nachtmahr
She came without opening the door.
She simply walked in, wearing short silver gloves that caught the moonlight, her fingers long and pale, her footsteps quieter than dust settling on a coffin.
The dreamer saw her before he understood that he was awake.
He tried to move. Nothing happened.
His arms lay heavy against the mattress, his tongue was stone, and his chest began to sink beneath an invisible weight. He wanted to scream, but his voice remained somewhere deep inside him, trapped behind his teeth. The room was familiar, yet terribly wrong. The wardrobe stood too tall. The shadows seemed to breathe.
She approached the bed.
He could feel her looking at him, though her face remained hidden in darkness. His heart hammered violently. Every instinct demanded that he run, but his body belonged to something else now.
She sat upon his chest.
The pressure increased. He struggled for air, certain that the next breath would be his last. He tried to pray, to curse, to call for someone, anyone. Only his eyes obeyed him, darting desperately across the room.
Then she leaned towards his ear.
Her silver fingertips brushed his throat.
And just before the darkness swallowed his sight, he heard her whisper:
“You called me a dream, little dreamer. How fortunate for you.”
He woke with a gasp.
The room was empty. His heart was still racing. The sheets clung damply to his skin.
But on his pillow, beside his face, lay a single silver thread.
