CC - My new job
Today, I begin my hiring test. I am lying inside a box. Only my head protrudes above the floor of an underground parking garage; I can barely move. The ground around me is cold and already filthy.
The first person stops above me. She is wearing heavy platform shoes, still caked in dried mud. She brings one foot toward my face, then presses the sole directly onto my tongue. The dirt is clumpy and slightly damp; she rubs it back and forth. I can feel the treads of the sole scraping against my lips and chin. She switches feet and presses down harder; my tongue flattens. Once finished, she walks away without even glancing at me. The taste of dirt lingers in my mouth.
The second person arrives immediately. She is wearing platform sandals with dirty straps and soles blackened by grime and a sticky substance. She places the first sandal directly onto my face: the heel against my cheek, the sole covering my mouth. She rubs, digging her heel into my mouth. The sole rasps against my skin. The other sandal follows. Finally, she wipes the last remnants off my tongue and steps on my head before walking away.
The third person stays longer. She is wearing worn, pointed-toe cowboy boots; their thick soles are black with dirt, soil, and a foul-smelling mud. She presses the entire sole against my mouth and pushes down hard. I can smell the leather and that thick, almost oily filth as she rubs up and down, then side to side, against my teeth and tongue. She switches to the other boot and begins again, lingering longer over my mouth and tongue to scrape off whatever remains beneath the sole. She presses her high heel into my mouth, rocking it back and forth, then drags the sole across my lips before moving away.
I remain there, my tongue still lolling out, my face marked by the three pairs of shoes but I hope I’ve succeeded.
