I was REALLY looking forward to this match.
Sonya caught my attention almost immediately. I love her powerful, muscular body, she’s strong, athletic and moves incredibly well for someone who is still such a beginner in wrestling.
And yes, technically there is a big difference between us right now.
I have years of experience behind me, while Sonya has only had a handful of matches. So I wasn’t interested in simply crushing her for the entire fight and never giving her the opportunity to show what she can actually do.
Instead, I wanted to play with her a little. ;-)
I gave her some space to work, fight, try her ideas and show me what happens when things don’t go her way.
And THAT is exactly what I wanted to see.
Because Sonya keeps trying.
Even when something fails, even when I have an answer for what she does, even when it must become pretty frustrating to keep running into someone with considerably more technical experience… she doesn’t mentally disappear from the match.
She tries again and again.
She fights, searches for another opportunity and doesn’t want to give me anything for free. There’s a certain spark in her that I really like.
You can teach technique. You can improve positioning. You can learn submissions, escapes and timing with enough hours on the mats.
But that natural desire to keep fighting when things aren’t going your way? That’s something I always love seeing in another wrestler.
And Sonya definitely has it.
Physically, she already has an amazing foundation: 176 cm, 77 kg, muscular, strong and athletic. Add some proper wrestling experience to that body and I honestly think she could climb our imaginary ranking of female fighters VERY quickly.
I also think the two of us clicked really well. There’s a nice vibe between us throughout the match, and I genuinely enjoyed wrestling her.
So Sonya… please keep training. ;-)
